Pinas secures $10M grant for water security project in Tawi-Tawi

MAY 7, 2025

Malacañang welcomed a US$10 million grant from the Adaptation Fund to boost water access in climate-vulnerable towns in Tawi-Tawi. The project, titled “Harnessing the Water-Energy-Food Nexus to Address and Adapt to Climate Change Impacts in Tawi-Tawi,” will support Sibutu and Sitangkai, aiming to provide safe and reliable water amid intensifying climate challenges. Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said this initiative is a step toward long-term resilience for the region.

This marks the Philippines’ first Adaptation Fund-backed initiative, set to benefit over 71,000 residents and aid the local seaweed industry. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources will lead implementation with support from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and Mindanao Development Authority to address climate-related water risks. The project highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring sustainable water solutions for remote and underserved communities.
