Water resources department expected to boost access to sanitation services

AUGUST 6, 2024

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) emphasized the need for a dedicated Department of Water Resources to centralize and streamline responsibilities for water and sanitation services currently scattered across various agencies. “One responsible institution is the optimal solution,” said NEDA Assistant Secretary Roderick M. Planta during the SME Finance Forum, calling for private sector support.

The proposed department is part of the administration’s priority bills, with expected Congressional approval by June 2025. NEDA’s Philippine Water Supply and Sanitation Master Plan estimates P1.07 trillion is needed by 2030 to achieve universal access. Industry leaders agree that unified regulation would attract private investment, while stakeholders stress the urgency of action even before the law passes.
