La Union Uses Bokashi Balls for
Water Treatment at Anito Falls
APRIL 28, 2025
In celebration of Earth Day, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) introduced bokashi balls—a natural water treatment method—at Anito Falls in Santol town on April 22. Bokashi balls, made from microorganisms, clay, and organic matter, help break down harmful sludge and waste in waterways. The initiative, led by PG-ENRO and MENRO Santol, aimed to combat rising water contamination levels, particularly fecal coliform, identified through PG-ENRO's monitoring.
After the application of bokashi balls, the water showed improvements in clarity, reduced murkiness, and less sediment buildup—signs of restored balance. The project also served as a hands-on environmental education experience for residents and youth volunteers. PENRO Annalyn Rosario-Valdez emphasized that bokashi balls are an eco-friendly, science-based approach with real benefits. This Earth Day initiative aligns with La Union’s commitment to climate resilience and sustainable natural site management.
